Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: ELECTRIC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a recognized hazard of electrical shock or burns: (a)P/V Arctic Star: Employees had occasion to work near a deck shack space heater with an electrical cord that was missing the first two inches of outer insulation. This condition exposed employees to possible electrical shock or burns in the event that the metal housing of the space heater came into contact with bare electrical conductors due to abrasion of the electrical cord. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to replace the electrical cord. (b)P/V Arctic Star: Employees had occasion to work near 48-inch fluorescent light fixtures in the electrical and maintenance shops that were less than 7 feet high. This conditions exposed employees to possible electrical shock or burns in the event the light tubes were accidentally broken. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to install guards over the light tubes.
