Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of Public Law 91-596, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to: injury from the unintended operation of a power press brake. (a)Fabrication Department, Cover Fabrication Area near center of North Wall - Employees operating the Wisconsin Hydraulic-Powered Press Brake, where the Roswell Louver Stamping (Die) operation was being run, were not protected from inadvertent stroking of the press brake due to the absence of a single-stroke mechanism, and the absence of a guard over the foot pedal. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: (1)Install a Stroking Control Mechanism whose design allows supervision to select the following operating modes: "OFF", "INCH", "SINGLE STROKE", etc., and (2)Provide a guard over the foot pedal.
