Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a). Employees in the plating shop were exposed to the hazard of explosion and/or fire from an open container of zinc dust located in close proximity to sulfuric acid. Damp zinc dust may ignite on exposure to air and if mixed with acid, may cause flammable hydrogen gas to be involved. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement methodto correct this hazard is to keep all conainers of zinc dust covered and away from any acids or other incompatible substances.
