SECTION 5(A)(1) OF THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT OF 1970: THE EMPLOYER DID NOT FURNISH EMPLOYMENT AND A PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WHICH WERE FREE FROM RECOGNIZED HAZARDS THAT WERE CAUSING OR LIKELY TO CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS PHYSICAL HARM TO EMPLOYEES IN THAT EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO AMMONIA INHALATION AND EYE/SKIN CONTACT: A) AMMONIA PLANT - THE AMMONIA PLANT PRESSURE RELIEF LINES AT LOCATIONS SUCH AS, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE "BULLETS" (STORAGE TANKS), THE "LOOP" AND THE REFRIGERATION SIDE OF THE PLANT, DISCHARGE INTO EMPLOYEE WORK AREAS. AMMONIA IS A SEVERE IRRITANT OF THE EYES, RESPIRATORY TRACT AND SKIN. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS THE USE OF FLARING, SCRUBBING OR RECAPTURE SYSTEMS ON THE RELIEF LINES AND/OR THE EXTENSION OF THE RELIEF LINES TO DILUTE RELEASES.
