Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Hazards of falling 30 feet to ground. Kisco Avenue, South and North Bound underpass: (a) On or about 4/28/92, four employee's were in the process of painting the underside of a bridge, approximately 30 feet (9.144 meters) above the concrete roadway (ground level). They were working from 2-special purpose fabricated stage scaffold without fall protection, also the staging (frame type hangers) platforms were not provided with hook stops to prevent the hangers and scaffolds platforms from sliding/ moving. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AMD ACCE[TABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS... (a) To assure that employees use lifelines and safety belts with lanyards in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.104(d). (b) Also provide hook stops which will lock in position, to prevent the sliding / moving of the hangers and scaffold platform. As required in ANSI A 10.8.88 (American National Standard for Construction and Demolition Operation, Scaffold Safety Requirement and 1990 Scaffold Industry Association Handbook for Scaffold Safety.)
