Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On or about 5/27/92, the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck, crushed or caught between vertical steel beams which were not adequately braced during heat application: a- Shop #7, Fabrication Shop - On or about 5/27/92, employees were exposed to being crushed or caught between vertical steel beams which were not adequately braced during heat application. Among feasible and acceptable methods to correct these hazards are as follows: 1- Adequately brace and support the steel beams during hte heat cambering operation, New York State Steel Construction manual, Section 1501.5. 2- Determine the method of support and computation for pre-loading prior to beginning the cambering operation, including the methods of supporting the beams, deterninbation of the magnitude of the loads placed over the beams to aid the cambering process. The aforementioned shall be described on a sketch sheet and approved by the engineering staff, New York State Steel Construction Manual, Section 1501.5.
