Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On or about 9/9/92, the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of serious crushing injuries from the dropping of the "U.S - Curtis" hydraulic automotive lifts while working under vehicles on the lifts which were operated without automatic locking devices: a- Condition noted on or about 9/9/92. Feasible and acceptable methods among others to correct the hazard the hazard is to: a- Install manufacturer's automotive lift locking devices. b- Remove lifts from service. c- Use four jack stands to support the vehicle when working under a lift that does not have a locking device or is below the point where the locking device is engaged. d- Instruct and train employees in the proper use of the manufacturer's automative lift locking devices where provided and safe operating instructions of the lifts. e- Conduct the recommended inspection sof the lifts by the manufacturer to ensure that the operating components are in safe operation condition and lift locking devices are operating. f- Post and maintain permanently on display the manufacturer's safe lifting instructions in the lift area.
