Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being pulled into and crushed by the rotating parts of a pipe threading machine: a)At the job site, Air National Guard Base, Hancock Fld, on or about 07-11-00, a Rigid 300 pipe threading machine was observed on the job site that the employer stated was used for applying threads to turn buckles. The Rigid 300 pipe threading machine did not have a constant pressure power switch that would automatically cease power to the threading machine when released as required by the American National Standards Institute B208.1-1982, section 4.4. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to install the pipe thread power switch with a constant pressure foot treadle in accordance with the ANSI standard B208.1-1982.
