Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employee(s) are exposed to crushing hazards while working under unsupported and unsecured equipment: (a) An employee performing maintenance working under a John Deere rotary harvesting unit, Model #688, attached to a John Deere forage harvester, Model #6750, was exposed to crushing hazards in that the locking pin, used to keep the cutter head from lowering in the event of a hydraulic failure, was not maintained to ensure the pin could properly secure the cutter head. (b) An employee performing maintenance working under a John Deere rotary harvesting unit, Model #688, attached to a John Deere forage harvester, Model #6750, was exposed to crushing hazards in that the rotary harvesting unit was not braced or supported to prevent the unit from falling. This exposed the employee to crushing hazards. Among others, a feasible means of abatement includes, but is not limited to: Follow the manufacturer recommendations which address proper inspection and maintenance of the locking pin and other safety devices associated with equipment and installation of bracing or blocking materials to be used while employees are exposed to unexpected movement of equipment to ensure employees working under equipment are protected from crushing hazards.
