Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of struck by or caught-in-between: a.On February 15, 1994, at about 10:40 a.m. and next to the drydock, two employees were in close proximity to a ship propeller blade, 5 feet tall and in upright position, when it was turned over. Employees were struck by and caught by the tip of their shoes between the propeller blade and the ground. One feasible and useful method, among others, to correct this hazard is to barricade and keep clear the landing area where the propeller blade is going to fall.
