Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries: (a) On or about March 17, 1992, employees moving 4000-lb. concrete blocks at the concrete ready-mix plant, New Strawn, Kansas, were exposed to crush injuries when caught between a concrete wall and a Caterpillar, Model 920, front-end loader. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: (1) Develop and implement a safety program designed to train all employees in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe and hazardous conditions; and, (2) Develop and implement a heavy equipment operator training program which includes a maintenance program for heavy equipment.
