Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Employees were exposed to the recognized hazard of exposure to toxic gases as a result of thermal oxidative degradations and heating of the volatile chemicals of epoxy resins, adhesives, and primers in Building 80, Materials And Processing laboratory from ovens and presses. The ovens and presses exhausted into the work area. Among other methods, one reasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard would be to exhaust the ovens and presses to the outside atmosphere. b) Employees were exposed to the recognized hazard of exposure to toxic gases as a rusult of thermal oxidative degradations and heating of the volatile chemicals of epoxy resins, adhesives, and primers in Department 230-4 (Production Integration Lab) from the ovens and the cavity presses. The ovens and cavity presses exhausted through vacuum pumps, which exhausted into the work area, or was directly vented out into the work area. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard would be to exhaust the ovens and presses to the outside atmosphere. c) Employees were exposed to the recognized hazard of exposure to toxic gases as a result of thermal oxidative degradations and heating of the volatile chemicals of Scotch-Weld EC-1290 primer by 3M in Department 273 (Materials and Processing Lab) from the oven. The oven exhausted into the work area. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard would be to exhaust the ovens and presses to the outside atmosphere.
