Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by falling trusses or falling because of collapsing trusses: a) On or about 10/05/91, employees were exposed to the hazard of collapsing trusses due to inadequate temporary bracing among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is for the employer to follow the Truss Plate Institute's Bracing Wood Trusses "BWT-76" for using 2" x 4" temporary bracing also applying bracing to three planes of reference in the roof system to insure stability: 1. Top chord (sheathing) plane. 2. Web member plane or vertical plane perpendicular to trusses, and 3. Bottom chord (ceiling) plane. Also, the first truss to be erected must be well braced as indicated in Figure 2 of BWT-76 in addition, each truss, as it is installed, should be temporarily braced, as it is erected, until the longer 2 x 4 bracing can be installed.
