Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the load slip off the hook, or the lifting device fails: a)Electrical Shop, on or about 4/17/02: A overhead hoist being used to move equipment had not been inspected on a frequent and periodic basis; had a support structure with unknown rated load capacity and had the safety clip missing from the load hook. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1.Inspect the support structures for the hoist as per ANSI B30.16-1973, and ensure hoist capacity does not exceed that of the support structure. 2.Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the hoists for wear, deteriorations and malfunction as per ANSI B30.16-1973. 3. Replace the missing safety clips on the hooks. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
