Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the load slip off the hook, or the lifting device fails: a)All Case Setup area, on or about 8/12/02: 1-ton CM hoist used to lift the Nitrider furnace cover had the safety latch missing from the load hook. b)All Case Setup area, on or about 8/12/02: 1/2-ton Budgit hoist used to hoist furnace trays and baskets of parts had the safety latch missing from the load hook. c)Vacuum Department, on or about 8/12/02: 1/2-ton Coffing hoist used to lift furnace trays and baskets of parts had the safety latch missing from the load hook. d)Car Furnace area, on or about 8/12/02: 1/2 ton Coffing hoist used to load the car furnace had the safety latch missing from the load hook. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Replace the missing safety latches on the load hooks. 2. Follow the requirements of the American National Standard for Overhead Hoists ANSI/ASME B30.16-1993, section 16, paragraph 16-1.2.9.
