Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of being struck by moving/rolling trucks and/or caught in between trucks and shop walls and tools during inspection, service, and repair of a variety of trucks inside the shop and in the parking lot. (a) Due to the nature of truck operation, the need for the truck to be running at times, and the involvement of the driver or owner/operator of the truck during initial inspection; unexpected start up and movement of trucks has occurred and is likely to occur in the future. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to implement the following: (1) Use wheel chocks any time a truck is inspected, serviced, or repaired; (2) Do not allow drivers or owner/operators to assist employees in the inspection, service, or repair of trucks in any way that may lead to unexpected movement of the trucks; (3) Develop a system to put a sign on the steering column warning not to start vehicle; and (4) Lock vehicle, if possible, to prevent unauthorized entry.
