Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: On or about May 4, 1992 employees in the material storage yard were exposed to steel corrugated pipe while securing and/or unsecuring the pipe to flatbed trailers. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard area to establish safe loading and securing methods such as, but not limited to: 1. Installing stakes at pre-determined intervals of a height to prevent load from moving. Hold forklift in position until wraps are applied or staked are capable of safely securing the load. Whichever of the two that will be most effective shall be used; and/or 2. Erecting a series of posts in yard that flatbed is placed adjacent to. Load on opposite side leaving forklist in position to prevent pipes from rolling while wraps are applied; and/or 3. Training employees in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and enforcing proper loading procedures.
