Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: On or before 7/23/90, employees working as inspectors in dept. 190 at the Timken Gambrinus Plant "A" were exposed to serious injury and and or death when wooden wedges used to hold pipe in position on the inspection table became disloged allowing the pipe which was approximately 19' 9" in length and 2,300 lbs., to roll down the table striking an employee and causing a fatal injury. %% Some methods what could be used to abate the situation would be to (1) Use of pins that protrude through the table and extend high enough above the table to prevent pipe from rolling (2) Use of rail clamps to keep pipe from rolling. (3) Testing of various wedges made of non-slip material or a non-slip surface which would keep the material from moving.
