Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) The hazards of using a blind railroad crossing located near the bulk station loader. Employees operating scoops and other equipment were required to cross the tracks at times when the view was blocked by railcars parked on the tracks on or about May 24, 1988 and at times prior thereto. Among other methods are the following feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard: 1) Have the switchman walk the crossing before allowing the train to cross. 2) Install an alarm system of bells and/or lights. 3) Do not park railcars where they block the view of the tracks.
