Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The Employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: employees working in the mixing room were exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by a falling metal dough trough weighing up to appx. 1750# which were suspended overhead by two Yale hoists. The troughs were raised overhead and left in that position while employees passed beneath them. In addition, the "saddles" used as lifting devices with the hoists and troughs had no identification information, no capacity marking, no evidence of proof testing having been performed, and no periodic inspections with inspection records. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to not leave loads suspended while unattended, prohibit workers from passing beneath suspended loads, and maintain lifting devices in accordance with ANSI B30.16 Overhead Hoist Standard; ANSI B30.20 Below the Hook Lifting Device Standard; and The National Safety Council Accident Prevention Manual.
