Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by fally 4 foot by 8 foot or 4 foot by 12 foot panels of transite during their removal from heights up to approximately 80 feet: Among other feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard is to elimanate employee exposure by implementing a procedure whereby no prior removal of bolts is allowed. Bolts would not be removed from panels until they are hooked up to block and tackle for lowering to the ground below. Calculation of wind direction and velocity need be determined prior to removal of panels to prevent wind from ripping panels loose from the building and/or implementing a procedure whereby the ground men lowering and receiving the removed transite panels are stationed a safe distance from the building. A safe distance would be determined based upon height of panels and wind con- ditions.
