Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards due to defective equipment such as hand holds, fixed ladders and cut levers on gondola rail cars throughout the facility: a) Lukens Steel Company - equipment such as hand holds, fixed ladders and cut levers on Gondola rail cars were defective. The ladder on rail car #434 was missing three (3) rungs. Ladders on other rail cars were also defective and a cut lever was observed to be missing from rail car #582. Observed 10/13/95. ABATEMENT NOTE: A feasible and useful method to correct this hazard, among other methods, is to adhere to the requirements of 49 CFR 231.2 (d) & (g) and Lukens Steel Company - Broad Gauge Cars - Loading #7 & 10 (3-92 page 25).
