Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CAUGHT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely ot cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of getting caught in the lines of a fishing net which was affixed to revolving stern net reel: a) Aboard the fishing vessel "New Age", a hydraulic winch lever was being used to activate a revolving stern net reel. The reel continued to spin when the employee was pulled away from the winch lever. The uncontrolled movement of the net reel caused the employee to be thrown over the top of the reel and into the water; on or about 6/29/90. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to to correct this hazard is the installation of a constant pressure winch control. This would preclude an employee operating the net reel from being pulled away from the winch control.
