Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LOCKOUT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to possibility of carbon monoxide intoxication while performing maintenance operations. a) Platform West Wall, Blast Furnace Building - employer did not make provisions to assure that the door of the blast furnace would not open while in operation with employees working in close proximity. Switch to open furance door mounted on platform was not guarded or locked out to prevent accidental contact. Observed 12/29/89. ABATEMENT NOTE: A feasible abatement method is to provide a lockout/ tagout system to render machines and equipment inoperative while employees are exposed to potential hazards.
