Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to aluminum dust: BUFFING DEPARTMENT: ALUMINUM PARTS WERE SANDED ON A SANDING MACHINE THAT WAS SERVICED BY A VENTILATION SYSTEM THAT WAS NOT DESIGNED FOR ALUMINUM DUST. THE SYSTEM WAS LOCATED INSIDE THE BUILDING, CONTAINED DRY BAG-TYPE FILTERS AND WAS ALSO USED FOR STAINLESS STEEL. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1.DESIGN AND INSTALL A DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION AGENCY STANDARD FOR THE PROCESSING AND FINISHING OF ALUMINUM (NFPA 65). OR, IN THE ALTERNATIVE 2.ELIMINATE THE USE OF ALUMINUM FOR PARTS THAT REQUIRE SANDING/BUFFING. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION
