Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by inflatable emergency air bags: (a) On or about 07/10/03 an employee demonstrating the NT ResQ bags to a group of volunteer fire fighters was exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by the air bags when they were expelled from the underside of a 191,000 pound front end loader. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Ensure that cribbing equipment is used to support the load that is being lifted during demonstrations and use of emergency air bags. 2. Provide training to employees required to demonstrate the use of emergency air bags to include the installation and use of cribbing equipment and the hazards associated with this activity. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement Certification Letter").tion
