Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to steam burns from open joints in steam lines and leaking pipe fittings. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to repair leaks and enclose joints in steam lines which will reduce or eliminate the likelihood of steam burns: In the following instances steam and hot water lines were leaking: a. #2PM OPERATING FLOOR DRIVE SIDE NEXT TO ROLL #14 - Steam line is vented out where oiler has to stand for greasing. b. #2PM OPERATING FLOOR DRIVE SIDE - Steam supply for #3 Oberle dryers had a leaking valve handle. c. #2PM OPERATING FLOOR DRIVE SIDE - Steam was leaking from the union of dryer #26. d. #7PM BASEMENT DRIVE SIDE THERMO COMPRESSOR - A leak in the flange of the compressor caused hot water to leak out. e. #7PM BASEMENT DRIVE SIDE CONDENSATE RETURN LINE - Malfunctioning valve caused steam to leak out from approximately 8' above floor. f. #8PM OPERATING FLOOR WEST WALL SUPPLY FAN 303 STEAM TRAP SYSTEM - A pinhole in piping by the stairway was spraying out hot water. g. #8PM OPERATING FLOOR DRIVE SIDE UNDER 1ST PRESS STEAM BOX PLC CABINET - Steam leaking out of vent pipe. h. BOND MILL, No. 8P.M. SAVEALL - There was a leak in the steam line valve behind two tanks. i. #7 & 8 SAVEALL BENEATH CATO STARCH TANK - Steam leaking from valve. j. #7 & 8 STOCK PREP AREA, SOUTH TOWER WEST SIDE - Steam line had a leak that was not repaired.
