Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: THE HAZARD OF AN EXPLOSION/FIRE FROM MAGNESIUM DUST. PATTERN SHOP, ON OR ABOUT 04/17/95, MAGNESIUM DUST IS CREATED BY EMPLOYEES GRINDING MAGNESIUM PLATES; RUNNERS AND RISERS TO BE MOUNTED ON PATTERNS ON MACHINES SUCH AS BUT NOT LIMITED TO: A 20" DISC SANDER. FIRE/EXPLOSION COULD OCCUR FROM SPARKS BEING GENERATED INTO THE DRY DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM, WHICH IS LOCATED INSIDE THE PATTERN SHOP. AMONG OTHER METHODS ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: INSTALL A WET OR DRY DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM, FOLLOW CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS AND INSTITUTE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 480. REFERENCE PUBLICATIONS: NFPA 480 - STANDARDS FOR THE STORAGE, HANDLING, AND PROCESSING OF MAGNESIUM SOLIDS AND POWDERS 1993 SECTION 4-2.3.1; 4-2.6.2; 4-3.1 AND 4-6.1
