Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards in that on or about November 13, 1991, and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck by falling loads while working inside of boxcars: a. New Mill - Pieces of wood were used as wheel chocks for rail cars, allowing the cars to be moved by locomotives by pulling the cars over/through the chocks while employees were still inside the rail cars. ABATEMENT NOTE: Feasible and acceptable abatement methods, among others, to correct this hazard are to: 1. Develop administrative procedures to ensure that all employees are out of the rail cars prior to moving. 2. Use wheel chocks which are designed for use with rail cars.
