Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards of serious cuts and lacerations. A) On or about July 26, 1990, and at times prior thereto at the St. Johns Catholic school renovation project, employees were permitted to operate a Bosch electric cut-off saw with a metal diamond tipped masonry saw blade which was not recommended for use in the saw by the manufacturer. ABATEMENT: A feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to permit only the two types of bonded reinforced abrasive wheels recommended for use in this saw to be used, and that the saw use be limited to cutting off the applicable material recommended in the operator's manual, rather than using the saw to cut through surfaces such as masonry walls.
