Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Anderson Tully Togo Island Tract, NW1/4 Section 35, T13N, R2E, Claiborne County, MS -- Employees were exposed to falling "saw-log" trees on October 8, 1992, in that : 1. During felling operations the recommended safe distance between workers of twice the height of trees being felled was not being maintained. 2. Workers were not signaling, then waiting for acknowledgement, before approaching the feller. 3. Trees were being felled without undercutting to control the direction of fall. 4. Chain saws were left running while being carried in heavy underbrush. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to instruct employees in the proper felling procedures listed above.
