Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) The hazard of being struck by falling sections/pieces of steel equipment such as a trash dump body. When this equipment was being cut into pieces by an employee using an oxygen acetylene cutting torch, on or about 2-1-88. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Develop and implement a specific step-by-step procedure for cutting up large pieces of steel equipment, i.e., Trash Dump bodies, cement mixer units, which does not require eqmployees to work under unsupported or inadequately supported section of this equipment, to perform the work; and 2) Train employees in the safe cutting procedure for this type of equipment and ensure the procedure is followed; and 3) Thoroughly inspect all large pieces of equipment, i.e., Trash Dump Bodies and Cement mixer units, for hazardous conditions such as Bodies and Cement mixer units, for hazardous conditions such as broken or cracked welds, deterioration due to rust, damaged structural support members prior to assigning the equipment to be cut, and take necessary precautions when such conditions are encountered.
