Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: ELECTRIC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) M/V Arctic Star: Employees in the box house, stern side, had occasion to use a 120-volt duplex outlet that had the polarity reversed. This condition subjected the employees to the possibility of contacting defective current carrying parts, resulting in shock, burns, or electrocution. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to wire this duplex outlet to meet the National Electrical Code. b) M/V Arctic Star: Employees in the processing deck production office had occasion to use 120-volt duplex outlet that had the polarity reversed. This condition subjected the employees to the possibility of contacting defective current carrying parts, resulting in shocks, burns, or electrocution. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to wire this duplex outlet to meet the National Electrical Code. c) M/V Arctic Star: Employees in the box house, stern side, had occasion to use the red insulated 120-volt flexible cord that had the ground prong missing. This condition subjected the employees to the possibility of contact defective current carrying parts, resulting in shock. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to dispose of the cord or reqire to meet the National Electrical Code.
