Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employeesin that employees were exposed to: (a) At Stone Container on the south end of Recaust, employees were exposed to the hazard of the mixing of hydrochloric acid with incompatible chemicals including spent sodium hydroxide, lime mud, and white liquor from tanks and the potential releaseof hydrogen sulfide gas in the event of tank rupture, leakage, or operator error. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to move the hydrochloric acid tank.
