Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BLOODBORNE
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that Health Care Workers Nurses) were exposed to the hazards of being infected by HBV and/or HIV possible direct contact with blood or other body fluids: a) Windber Hospital; Employees were not initially tested and post- exposure restested for HIV antibodies & HBV upon blood contaminated needle stick injuries. b) Upon employee exposure to possible contaminated blood, source patients were not tested for HIV antibodies. Feasible and useful abatement methods for reducing this hazard, among others are; 1) Follow-up procedures after possible exposure to HIV/HBV should include initial, 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 6 months post exposure HIV testing. 2) All source patients sould be approached and HIV tested upon consent. 3) If source patient refuses consent, follow-up should be done on exposed employee, regardless.
