Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death serious physical harm to employees in that: a) Crematory building: On 10/25/85, employees were exposed to the hazard of possible furnace explosion when operating any of four natural gas fueled cremation retorts which lacked any safety devices that would quickly and automatically shut off the fuel supply if an unsafe condition developed within the retort. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to replace existing burners with those designed and installed according to the National Fire Protection Association Standard for Industrial Furnaces (NEPA 86b-1982).
