Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CAUGHT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: On or about 5/17/86 at hanger #8, employees were exposed to the hazards of being caught between or struck by heavy parts of the right main landing gear door of the A-300 aircraft no. 215, while the employees were removing the right main landing gear door without following the specific procedures in the applicable aircraft maintenance manual and not using the specific equipment required by the applicable aircraft maintenance manual. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is the implementation and enforcement of a program governing all aspects of aircraft maintenance in general. The program should contain the following as a minimum: 1) Employees shall be instructed to read and become familiar with Aircraft Maintenance Manuals. 2) Employees shall be instructed to read and become familiar with the illustrated Tool and Equipment Manuals. 3) Enforce the use of both Aircraft Maintenance Manuals and illustrated Tool and Equipment Manuals when employees perform maintenance on aircrafts. 4) Establish a list of Stations where tools and equipment, required to be used can be obtained.
