Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) The hazard of being caught between the bucket in which they were riding and an overhead bridge structure which could result in crushing injuries. Two employees riding in the bucket of a Caperpillar model 966C front and loader were being raised approx. in feet with a 6" x 6 x 16' long wooden beam lying across the bucket of the loader. They were installing the beams between the bottom edge of concrete bridge piers and steel "1" beam supports, and were exposed to injuries if the operator lost control of the loader. Location South Bay Road and Rt 11, west of 1-81 underneath Old Bridge, north end. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard, is to use an aerial lift to perform this work.
