Abstract: At approximately 9:30 a.m. on November 25, 1996, Employee #1, a 24-year-old male, was working aboard the F/V Stormbird. The vessel had been participating in a tanner crab opening and was docked at the city pier in Old Harbor, Kodiak Island, AK. Employee #1 was making a commercial SCUBA dive, attempting to untangle crab lines from the vessel's propeller. He entered the water shortly after 9:00 a.m. and was in the water only 10 to 15 minutes before he surfaced and yelled for help. When he submerged, the crew began using grappling hooks and fishing line to rescue him, eventually snagging Employee #1, who was pulled from the water unconscious.
