Abstract: On May 17, 2008, Employee #1, a field laborer, was part of a crew laying out irrigation hoses at a tomato/cucumber field on a day when the temperature reached 101 degrees Fahrenheit. This strenuous activity was conducted in the sun, but employees had access to water and shade. Prior to lunch time (12:00 p.m.), Employee #1 experienced discomfort and leg cramps. After resting and drinking more water, his symptoms were alleviated and he was able to resume work. In mid-afternoon, he started to experience leg and arm cramps, and felt nauseous. He drank more water and was allowed to rest in the shade of a tree. The supervisor returned to the field around 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. with more water and sports drinks. He transported Employee #1 and another employee to the City of Arbuckle. The supervisor's wife then transported Employee #1 to his mother's home.
