Abstract: At approximately 8:30 a.m. on April 10, 2006, Employee #1 was working as a fabricator for Coastal Marble, a privately owned company engaged in cutting and shaping marble. Owned by a sole owner, the four-year-old company had been at its current location in Paramount, CA, for only two weeks at the time of the accident. Employee #1 had been employed at Coastal Marble for three years. His direct supervisor was in front of the shop at the time of the accident. Employee #1 and his two coworkers were looking for a particular piece of marble to work on. The first coworker asked Employee #1 to move one piece of marble at a time so they could locate the piece they were looking for. Employee #1 pulled two pieces of marble toward him and stabilized the two pieces of marble with his hands, while the two coworkers looked at the other pieces of marble that were stacked in the same configuration. A third piece of marble fell onto the two pieces of marble that Employee #1 was stabilizing, and he could not hold the additional weight. He lost his balance and fell to the ground, with the pieces of marble falling on him. He was transported by emergency medical services to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, CA, where he underwent surgery for a fractured pelvis. He remained in the hospital for more than twenty-four hours. Cal/OSHA has determined that there are no applicable standards for this incident.
