Abstract: Three employees were working inside a two-story framed building that was reportedly under exploratory demolition. The interior walls finishes were stripped exposing the studs. The flooring and floor joist of the first level had been removed exposing the existing footings, posts and dirt. The employees were working in the front right hand section of the building that was the last section to be completed on the first level. The employees had jacked the building up and were replacing rotted-out structural members such as headers, posts and other structural members when they heard a cracking sound and noticed the top level leaning and falling to the right. The three employees tried to exit the building as it started to collapse. Employee #1 tried to exit the building through the front doorway. The threshold was approximately 36 in. above the dirt floor delaying the employee from exiting. As Employee #1 climbed out he was caught under and killed by the falling structure. Employee #2 was trying to exit the building through the front door and was pinned under Employee #1's feet and falling debris. Employee #2 was able to crawl out from under the collapsed structure. Employee #2 received cuts, abrasions, and contusions to the head, torso, arms and legs and a separated shoulder. Employee #3 tried to exit through the rear of the building and managed only to make it the center of the building before he collapsed. After the debris settled Employee #3 climbed out a window in the back of the house. Reportedly this employee received a scratch to his arm from a falling board. Employee #1 was killed and Employee #2 and Employee #3 were treated for their injuries but were not hospitalized.
