Abstract: On May 26, 2006, Employee #1 was operating a Whirlwind, Model Number 212, under cut, cut off saw. He was cutting a piece of plastic banding that was 0.125 in. thick by 0.75 in. wide. The saw is usually used to cut lumber that is 1.5 in. thick and the blade guard was set for these cuts. Employee #1 had not adjusted the height of the blade guard to a height of 0.25 in. above the plastic material being cut. When the activation pedal was stepped on, the blade guard dropped and secured the material in place, then the saw blade rose from underneath the table and cut the material. After stepping on the pedal, Employee #1 was injured when his hand became caught by the blade guard as the saw blade was rising. He was treated for a partial amputation of his thumb, first and second fingers.
