Abstract: At approximately 5:30 a.m. a Mesa Unified School District Number 4 bus driver was turning a 38-ft Blue Bird bus through a 160-degree turn to the left, when the driver saw an object fly through her path of vision outside the left front side window. The driver, stopped the bus, and investigated. She found Employee #1, a driver, on the ground at the rear left side of the bus, and he was not moving. The bus driver called the dispatcher via radio and requested assistance. The dispatcher saw the severity of the problem and instructed a coworker to summon emergency medical services. The responding police officers attempted rescue techniques, and gave way to EMT personnel from the Mesa Fire Department, on their arrival. Native Air's helicopter transported Employee #1 to Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, Osborne. The Native Air medics reported chest crushing injuries, and the Fire Department EMT crew reported severe abrasion injuries to the anterior left forearm. Employee #1 was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. From marks and displacement of a mirror on the bus, it was apparent that Employee #1 made contact with the front left side of the bus, ahead of the front wheel, but behind the lower side and rear view mirror on the bus.
