Abstract: At approximately 10:00 a.m. on May 22, 2001, a rail maker, employed at a window shutter manufacturing plant, was injured on a table saw. The table saw did not have a guard, spreader, or antikickback device. The employee was reducing the width of a piece of wood piece to 4 inches (the original size of the wood was 10 inches long by 5 inches wide by 0.75 inches thick). He was cutting along the grain of the wood without a push stick. As the employee was feeding the material through the saw, it began to kick back. He then applied pressure to the wood to keep it from kicking back, and the table saw then took the wood and pulled it forward. His left hand contacted the rotating blade, and the employee was hospitalized with an amputation to the second and third fingers. According to the injured employee, no one in the company used a push stick and he was never instructed to use one.
