Abstract: At 5:30 p.m. on May 3, 2001, a serious occupational injury occurred at I & E Cabinets, Inc., in Paramount, California. Employee #1 was an employee of I & E Cabinets Inc for about 3.5 years. Employee #1 had been performing this job for about 2.5 years. The injury occurred while Employee #1 was using a Powermatic table saw to cut a 20-inch by 22-inch by 0.25-inch piece of medium density fiberboard with a melamine coating. Employee #1 began the cut 5.1-inches from the edge and cut about 1.25-inches. At that point the cut was 5.3-inches from the edge. Employee #1 probably tried to correct this, causing the saw blade to jam. When Employee #1 tried to free the board by lifting it up, the saw blade caused the board to rotate and kick back, striking Employee #1 in the abdomen. Initially it was thought that the board had just knocked the wind out of Employee #1, but later when Employee #1 complained of pain he was taken to Suburban Hospital in Paramount, California, where he spent 14 days recovering from internal injuries.
