Abstract: At approximately 11:00 a.m. on January 14, 2000, Employee #1 was operating a 10-in. table saw to rip a 1-in. by 2-in. by 8-ft board to make shims for a door jam. The hood guard was not in use at the time of the accident. Coworkers had been using the same saw to rip 4-ft by 8-ft by 0.75-in. sheets of T-111 plywood and had removed the hood guard because of the size of the material. The hood guard was lying on the ground near the saw. Employee #1 said that he did not notice that the hood guard was missing nor did he remember the coworkers telling him that the guard had been removed. Employee #1 stated he adjusted the fence, ripped a shim, and readjusted the fence to get the correct width. Employee #1 turned the board end-for-end and began to rip the board. At this point, Employee #1 cut his thumb. Employee #1 found two coworkers working in an adjacent room. One coworker wrapped a clean towel around Employee #1's thumb and the other coworker turned off the saw and notified the supervisor. Employee #1 suffered a longitudinal laceration of his left thumb with bone loss, with loss of feeling and loss of range of motion. Employee #1 was treated for his injuries but was not hospitalized.
