Abstract: At approximately 11:10 a.m. on February 8, 2000, Employee #1, a lead man in the mill department, was adjusting the in and out settings on the rear trimming motor of a Homag SE 9400 Edgebander, Type KL 074/QA/20, NR 0-200-08-144. This machine cuts the laminate that is glued to the edge of wood furniture. Employee #1 stated that after he adjusted the trim motors they would only cut in the correct place a few times and then they would need readjustment. As Employee #1 adjusted a thumb screw for the rear trim motor his hand and glove were caught in the cutting disks. The Edgebander had not been stopped, the power source was not de-energized, nor where the movable parts mechanically blocked or locked out to prevent inadvertent movement. The access door interlock which de-energizes the trimming motors and cutting disks and been disengaged, and the Edgebander and been restarted in this mode. Employee #1 was hospitalized for amputation of the right ring finger.
