Abstract: On May 17, 2007, Employee #1 and a crew were tree trimming, clearing lines. They had a few dead trees to fall that were within reach of the lines. Employee #1 cut a 24-in. diameter, 112 ft tall tree which became lodged in another tree. They attempted to pull the tree at the butt with a winch but could not move it. Employee #1 climbed a tree adjacent to the tree that the felled tree was lodged in and tied a rope to it at a height of 55 ft. They ran the rope through a block that was hung on a tree 40 ft off to the side and then back to a tree under the lodged tree where a capstan winch was anchored. They tensioned the line at which point the lodged tree dislodged and fell towards them. Employee #1 was struck by the tree as he retreated. He received serious back injuries and was hospitalized.
