Abstract: On January 7, 2008, Employee #1 and a coworker were dismantling a flow hood unit. The coworker was manually supporting the unit from one end while Employee #1 unbolted the back panel of the structure. The unit now was resting on two channel frames. Due to its lack of stability, one side of the unit tilted toward Employee #1 and then fell over, pinning him to the ground. He sustained compression of his L1 lumbar vertebra and was admitted to the Regional Medical Center in San Jose at 1:05 p.m.; he was discharged at noon the next day, January 8, 2008. No treatment was provided except for pain killers and observation. Employee #1 and the coworker did not follow the appropriate procedure for dismantling a flow hood unit, and they did not use the material handling equipment provided by the employer.
